Family Synod Survey
An Extraordinary Synod of the Family has been called by Pope Francis in October, 2014. The purpose of this “extraordinary” synod is to prepare the agenda for the already scheduled Synod on the Family in October of 2015. In preparation for the Extraordinary Synod, Msgr. Lorenzo Baldisseri distributed a survey to all the bishops of the world, requesting that it be “distributed as widely as possible”.
Since the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops did not solicit input for the survey from the faithful, COR organizations prepared a comparable survey and made it available to all. Over 16, 000 responses were tallied. A full summary of the results of this survey, as prepared by Dr. Peter Fagan, can be found here.
Dr. Fagan concludes his 16-page analysis with summarizing the “one near-universal hope” for the respondents to this survey, by quoting Pope Francis: “The Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel” (Evangelii Gaudium, #114).
COR has forwarded the Family Synod Survey results to the appropriate Vatican offices and also the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.
The American Catholic Council will continue to monitor responses to the Survey and developments in regard to the Extraordinary Synod. Plans are being developed to have a significant presence of the Faithful in Rome to provide a voice for Catholic families on these issues of such importance.
